Fiji is a country with strong and prosperous economy among the Pacific island countries whose pillar industries are sugar industry and tourism. It pays much attention to the development of national economy and private enterprises. Besides, it provides a liberal policy environment to promote investment and export, aiming at an export-oriented economy with “high increase, low tax and dynamic development”. However, the sugar industry has been in a predicament due to the decreasing price in foreign market and the adjustment of domestic industrial structure in recent years.
Fiji has an arable area of about 288,000 hectares, mainly producing sugarcane, coconuts and bananas. All wheat is imported and only 20% rice can be self-sufficient. In recent years, Fiji’s government attempts to achieve diversified development and promote rice cultivation. Additionally, it is rich in fishery resources, especially in tuna. What’s more, Fiji’s forest covered area is 0.935 million hectares, accounting for half of the whole country’s land area and about 0.25 million hectares has exploitation value, producing quality hardwood and pine.
Fiji has been in trade deficit in a long term. Its main export partners are America, Australia and England, exporting sugarcane, fishes, gold, timbers and mineral water and its main import partners are America, China, etc.,importing fuel, transportation equipment, chemical products, food, etc.
